In India, almost 1.6 billion tons of ash are currently in ash ponds across the country, causing water & air pollution for which industries are looking for solutions to pack this fly-ash for easy and pollution-free handling & transportation.

Environmental Hazards during Transportation of Fly ash in Open Trucks –

Fly ash is generally transported in open trucks, has many difficulties while transporting distances. The flying Ash Dust Pollutes the entire Area.

• Fly ash leach harmful constituents that can be thousand times greater than the federal drinking water level anywhere.
• Wet ash ponds can pollute groundwater and if ingested, the arsenic contaminated water increases a person’s risk of developing cancer. Inhalation or ingestion of the toxins in fly ash can have impacts on the nervous system, causing cognitive defects, lungs disease, etc.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Guidelines for Fly ash –

• The new requirements stipulate that the CPCB guidelines should be followed in the case of the disposal of fly ash, it should be away from Open Water source at least of 500 meters of safe distance and abandoned mines. Thermal power plants and use agency collectively shall ensure that fly ash is transported in environmentally sound manner.
